Can common medications make your tinnitus worse? Yes, but it is rare!

A few of our members of Tinnitus Tunes tell us either their tinnitus started, or got much worse when they were prescribed drugs by their doctor. However, it is important to avoid scaremongering as it is rare for tinnitus to be linked to a change in medication.
The British Tinnitus Association publish a good balanced paper that states only about 1 in 1,000 people report tinnitus as a side effect when taking commonly prescribed medications for high blood pressure, lowering cholesterol (statins) and drugs for treating anxiety or difficulty sleeping. We give a link to the BTA paper below.
There are some medicines that are more likely to cause tinnitus, but they are powerful drugs usually used within a hospital environment to treat serious infections or cancer. In most cases, when you come off those meds the tinnitus will also disappear.
Our advice
Do let your doctor know you have tinnitus so they can help
If you feel any prescribed medications are making your tinnitus worse, discuss it with your doctor. They may be able to change your medication.
Avoid becoming dependent on long term use of drugs to reduce anxiety or help you sleep. Seek more natural approaches, including the recommended treatment techniques as a member of Tinnitus Tunes. You should always involve your doctor in a planned change of medication
